The twentieth René Cassin European Human Rights Competition is taking place from 13 to 16 April 2004 at the Council of Europe. The competition involves mock trials in French based on the European Convention on Human Rights and is open to students of law and political sciences.
Every year universities compete with each other in Strasbourg in a human rights competition based on their analysis of a fictitious case before the European Court of Human Rights. The René Cassin Competition has been held annually since 1985 and is organised by the association JURIS LUDI ("game of law"). It is sponsored by the Council of Europe and has established itself as one of the world's foremost French-speaking mock-trial events.
During the first phase of the competition, each team drafts a two-part memorial, one part on behalf of the applicant and one part on behalf of the respondent. This requires them to analyse the European Convention on Human Rights, study the corresponding case-law, research legal theory, and apply consistent and sound legal reasoning based on valid arguments. They also need to have a good command of French, the competition's official language.
During the second phase, at the Human Rights Building in Strasbourg, teams have an opportunity to display their public-speaking skills and compare their legal reasoning while acting out the parts of barristers or government officials before a jury composed of academics, judges, international civil servants and barristers.
They are then ranked according to their total score, obtained by adding together the marks awarded for their performance during the mock-trial and their marks for the memorial. The best team on the side of the applicant and the best team on the side of the respondent then compete in the final which is held in the Hearing Room of the European Court of Human Rights. Their performance is assessed by prestigious political and legal personalities.

The Association Juris Ludi has some thirty members, all students, and all volunteers, who, on top of their university studies, are busy all year round with the selection of teams and jury members, arranging board and lodging for them during the competition week and, above all, ensuring the competition goes ahead smoothly.
