Secretary General at the OSCE Permanent Council: ''Setting a single agenda for the continent''

22.07.2004 - Addressing the OSCE Permanent Council in Vienna on 22 July, Council of Europe Secretary General Walter Schwimmer proposed ''a single agenda for the continent'', involving all national and international actors in Europe and aiming to meet the continent’s needs and ambitions at a pan-European level. Tripartite meeting of the Council of Europe, the UN and the OSCE in spring 2005

22.07.2004 - After Walter Schwimmer´s speech at the Permanent Council meeting, he met with the Secretary General of the OSCE, Jan Kubis. Three points were at the center of their meeting. A new tripartite meeting with the UN and the OSCE will be hosted by the Council of Europe in spring 2005 in Strasbourg. One of the questions discussed will be media freedom in Europe. (more ...)

Walter Schwimmer and Maud de Boer-Buquicchio to take part in OSCE events in Vienna

The Secretary General and the Deputy Secretary General are to take part in separate events organised by the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in Vienna later this week. On 22 July, Walter Schwimmer will address the meeting of the Permanent Council of the OSCE, before holding discussions with the organisation’s Secretary General Jan Kubis. (more…)

The Council of Europe and the OSCE : A close co-operation

The relationship between the Council of Europe and the OSCE is based on the common values of democracy, human rights and the rule of law, and the Organisations' commitment to mutual reinforcement of action, taking into consideration the difference in membership and working methods. The co-operation between the Council of Europe and the OSCE concerns such areas as: democracy, human rights, rule of law, minorities… A specific field of co-operation is the observation of elections in which the Council of Europe takes part. Making Europe a safer and fairer place to be is the common objective of the Council of Europe and OSCE says Walter Schwimmer

Addressing the OSCE Ministerial Council in Porto on 7 December 2002, Secretary General Walter Schwimmer pointed to the Council of Europe’s efforts, in partnership with other organisations, to expand democratic values to the whole continent. He said that helping to build democratic institutions was not enough, however, and encouragement needed to be given to all sectors of society to adopt the same fundamental values as each other. Mr Schwimmer advocated uncompromising action against terrorism, but without foregoing democratic principles. (more…)
