During the Congress session, Giovanni Di Stasi (Italy, SOC) was elected President of the Council of Europe Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of Europe.
President of the Chamber of the Regions for the past two years, takes over from out-going President Herwig van Staa of Austria. He will hold the position for two years.
The three-day session includes debates on Russia, Georgia, Armenia and South East Europe. Other topics on the agenda include immigrant participation in city life, policing, drinking water quality, tourism and sports violence.
Guests at the session include Parliamentary Assembly President Peter Schieder, Council of Europe Secretary General Walter Schwimmer, Armenian Local Government Minister Hovik Abrahamyan, Norwegian Minister of Local and Regional Government Erna Solberg (on behalf of the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers) and Peter Straub, President of the European Union Committee of the Regions.
