Turkey became the 13rd member State of the Council of Europe on 9 August 1949.

Parliamentary Assembly
Turkey is represented in the Parliamentary Assembly by a delegation of 12 representatives and 12 substitutes, including:
- Mevlüt ÇAVUŞOĞLU (EDG), head of the delegation and Parliamentary Assembly Vice-President.
- Mehmet TEKELİOĞLU (EPP/CD), second Vice President of the Committee on Culture, Science and Education.
Congress of Local and Regional Authorities
Turkey is represented in the Congress by a delegation of 12 representatives and 12 substitutes, including:
- Gaye DOGANOGLU (EPP/CD), Muratpasa/Antalya, head of the delegation.
- Yavuz MİLDON (EPP/CD), Çanakkale, elected President of the Congress on 27 May 2008.
Budget
The Council of Europe's ordinary budget for 2009 is € 205 002 000. The contribution of Turkey is € 6 878 022.10 (i.e. 3.3551 %).
Human Rights
Turkey ratified the European Convention on Human Rights on 18 May 1954.

- Applications allocated to a decision body (*) in 2008 : 3706
- Judgments in 2008: 264 of which 257 violations and 1 non-violation
