Sweden was one of the ten States which founded the Council of Europe on 5 May 1949.

Parliamentary Assembly
Sweden is represented in the Parliamentary Assembly by a delegation of 6 representatives and 6 substitutes, including:
- Göran LINDBLAD (EPP/CD), head of the delegation and Chairperson of the Political Affairs Committee.
- Björn von SYDOW (SOC), second Vice-Chairperson of the Political Affairs Committee.
Congress of Local and Regional Authorities
Sweden is represented in the Congress by a delegation of 6 representatives and 6 substitutes, including:
- Anders KNAPE (EPP/CD), Karlstad, head of the delegation, Vice-President of the Congress and Vice-President of the Chamber of Local Authorities.
Commissioner for Human Rights
- Thomas HAMMARBERG has been elected Commissioner for Human Rights on 5 October 2005.
Budget
The Council of Europe's ordinary budget for 2009 is € 205 002 000. The contribution of Sweden is € 4 326 772.21 (i.e. 2.1106 %).
