Italy was one of the ten States which founded the Council of Europe on 5 May 1949.

Parliamentary Assembly
Italy is represented in the Parliamentary Assembly by a delegation of 18 representatives and 18 substitutes, including:
- Luigi VITALI (EPP/CD), head of the delegation and Parliamentary Assembly Vice-President.
- Pietro MARCENARO (SOC), second Vice-Chairperson of the Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights.
Congress of Local and Regional Authorities
Italy is represented in the Congress by a delegation of 18 representatives and 18 substitutes, including:
- Fabio PELLIGRINI (SOC), Rapolano Terme, head of the delegation, Vice-President of the Congress and Vice-President of the Chamber of Local Authorities.
Budget
The Council of Europe's ordinary budget for 2009 is € 205 002 000. The contribution of Italy is € 24 433 778.38 (i.e 11.9188 %).
Human Rights
Ratification of the European Convention on Human Rights on 26 October 1955.
