Directorate General of Democracy: new web portal14/03/2014 - The Directorate General of Democracy (DGII) of the Council of Europe has put its new user-friendly web portal online at www.coe.int/democracy. The portal is more dynamic, more intuitive and much easier to navigate than the previous version and provides a quicker access to the entire range of DGII activities, structures and tools.
The new DGII portal is designed with a view primarily to the hands-on activities promoting human dignity and democratic competences on the ground.
The overall mandate of the Directorate General of Democracy is to support the Council of Europe action in fields which are critically important for the sustainability of democracy and for ensuring human dignity:
Eurimages co-production La Grande Bellezza wins Academy Award for best foreign language film
04/03/2014 -La Grande Bellezza (The Great Beauty) received the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film at Sunday’s Academy Awards ceremony in Hollywood.
Paolo Sorrentino’s film, a co-production between Italy and France supported by the Council of Europe’s fund Eurimages, has already won a European Film Award, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts), and premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.(Press release)
Big wins for Eurimages at the Belgian Magritte Awards
04/02/2014 -The fourth edition of the “Magritte” which was held on Saturday evening awarded the animation film Ernest et Célestine, supported by Eurimages and already nominated at the Oscars. Rewarded with the Prize for Best Film and Best Sound, Stéphane Aubier, Vincent Patar and Benjamin Renner received the Prize for Best Director. The Prize for Best Flemish Film in Co-production was awarded to the film Kid by Fien Troch, also winner of the Eurimages Co-production Development Awarded and supported by Eurimages. La Vie d’Adèle by Adbdellatif Kechiche was awarded the prize for Best Foreign Film in Co-production as well as the prize for Best Supporting Actress (Catherine Salée). The co-production Tango Libre, also supported by Eurimages, received the prize for Best Original Screenplay or Adaptation (Philippe Blasband and Anne Paulicevich) as well as the prize for Best Decor (Véronique Sacrez). The prize for Best Editor was awarded to the film Kinshasa Kids (Marie-Hélène Dozo). Finally, three other films supported by Eurimages were awarded – Le Passé by Asghar Farhadi with the prize for Most Promising Young Actress (Pauline Burlet), Le Temps de l’Aventure by Jérôme Bonnell with the prize for Best Supporting Actor (Laurent Capelluto) and La Religieuse by Guillaume Nicloux with the prize for Best Actress to Pauline Etienne. Golden Globe for La Grande Bellezza
16/01/2014 - Italian director Paolo Sorrentino picked up the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film in Los Angeles for the Eurimages supported co-production La Grande Bellezza (Italy, France) which was the big winner of last year’s European Film Awards, taking home four gongs – for best European director, actor, editor and best film.

The Broken Circle Breakdown wins EU's LUX Prize
11/12/2013 – The Eurimages supported co-production between Belgium and The Netherlands by Felix Van Groeningen was chosen by the MEPs to receive the LUX Prize 2013 which was awarded today during a European Parliament plenary session in Strasbourg.
All three films selected as finalists for the LUX Prize have been awarded subtitles in the 23 official languages of the European Union, as well as a 35 mm film copy for each member state from the European Parliament. As LUX Prize finalists, they were screened in several important film festivals and at the LUX Film Days across Europe.
Multiple awards for Eurimages at the European Film Awards, Berlin!
09/12/2013 – The European Film Awards Ceremony which was held on Saturday evening in Berlin awarded no less than nine prizes to European co-productions supported by the Eurimages Fund.
La Grande Bellezza (IT, FR) by Paolo Sorrentino was awarded the Prize for Best European Film, the Prize for Best European Director, the one for Best European Actor for Toni Servillo and the Prize for Best European Editor 2013 for Cristiani Travaglioli. The Prize for Best Comedy given for the first time this year was awarded to the film Love Is All You Need by Susanne Bier (DK, SE), the Prize for Best European Actress 2013 was awarded to Veerle Baetens for her interpretation in The Broken Circle Breakdown (BE, NL) by Felix Van Groeningen and the Prize for Best European Animation Film was awarded to an outstanding co-production, The Congress (DE, BE, PL, LU, FR, IL) by Ari Folman. The film Blancanieves (ES, FR) by Pablo Berger won the Prize for Best Costumes for Paco Delgado and the Prize for Best Sound 2013 was awarded to Matz Müller and Erik Mischijew for the film Paradies : Glaube (AT, FR, DE) by Ulrich Seidl.
Rossy de Palma presented the Co-production Award – Prix EURIMAGES to the producer Ada Solomon (HiFilm, Bucarest) for her precious contribution to the success of European cinema and in particular cinematographic co-production. CPH:DOX : The first Eurimages Co-production Development Prize for Documentaries has been awarded to…
18/11/2013 – The CPH:FORUM event organised in the framework of the CPD:DOX (Copenhagen, 7-17 November 2013) and the Eurimages Fund have awarded the first Eurimages Co-production Development Prize of 15 000 euros for Documentaries to the project Aquarela which will be directed by Victor Kossakovsky (RU) and produced by the companies ma.ja.de (DE) and Aconite Productions (GB). Czech Little Crusader wins Eurimages Development Award in Rome
18/11/2013 – An “original, distinctive and daring project” won the €30,000 Eurimages Co-Production Development Award for the best project presented at the co-production forum New Cinema Network (Rome Film Festival, 8-17/11/2013). The Czech project Little Crusader to be directed by Vaclav Kadrnka and produced by Alice Tabery and Marko Shop for Sirius Film (CZ) convinced the Jury composed of Dorien van de Pas, Marie-Pierre Duhamel and Sandra Hebron as an “original, distinctive and daring project which combines a visionary director with an energetic and ambitious production team, who together have demonstrated to have a clear understanding of co-producing in Europe”.
La Grande Bellezza is awarded the Eurimages Prize in Seville!
18/11/2013 - The Jury of the Seville European Film Festival (SEFF) which came to a close last Saturday, chose to award the Eurimages Prize of 10 000 euros to the producer of the film La Grande Bellezza by Paolo Sorrentino. This film selected in official competition of the Festival was also awarded the Prize for Best Actor (Toni Servillo) and the Association of Film Writers of Andalusia (Asecan) presented its award for the Official Section to La grande bellezza, by Paolo Sorrentino, “for composing a fabulous fresco of society that represents the western world, making a profound criticism through beauty as a human creation”.
The Audience Grand Prix for the EFA Selection, a section made up by the most awarded and applauded European films, was for Alabama Monroe, by Felix Van Groeningen, Belgium’s representative for the Oscar.

Etoiles et Toiles du Cinéma Européen: Action!
02/10/2013 – The 14th edition of the Etoiles et Toiles du Cinéma Européen event will start on 8 October 2013 at the Odyssée cinema in Strasbourg with the screening of the film As if I’m Not There by Juanita Wilson, a co-production between Ireland, the "former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia" and Sweden. This initiative organised in collaboration with the Council of Europe will offer Alsatian audiences the opportunity to discover or re-visit a selection of 11 European co-productions supported by Eurimages Fund. A Jury composed of eight Ambassadors from the Permanent Representations to the Council of Europe, the Deputy General Secretary of the Council of Europe and the Executive Director of Eurimages, will award at the end of the event on 5 November 2013 at 8.30 pm two honorary prizes:

Cannibal by Manuel Martín Cuenca (ES, RO, RU, FR), selected in the Official Competition;
Las Brujas de Zugarramurdi (Witching and Bitching) by Álex de la Iglesia (ES, FR), selected Out of Competition and
The Gambler by Ignas Jonynas (LT, LV) and Yozgat Blues by Mahmut Fazil Coskun (TR, DE), both selected in the New Directors Section.
Moreover, the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) will grant its Grand Prix for Best Film of the Year to the Eurimages supported co-production La Vie d’Adèle – Chapitre 1&2 (Blue is the Warmest Colour) by Abdellatif Kechiche (FR, BE, ES) during the opening gala of the San Sebastian Festival on 20 September 2013.

18/09/2013 – The President of Eurimages, Jobst Plog, together with the Executive Director, Roberto Olla, have great sorrow in informing you of the death of Nils Klevjer Aas, Representative of Norway to the Eurimages Board of Management.
Active for more than 30 years in the European film and audiovisual industry, Nils worked at the Film Institute in Norway after having held various positions including that of Director of the European Audiovisual Observatory in Strasbourg.
Nils was particularly appreciated by the whole of the Eurimages Board of Management and the Secretariat for his exceptional competences in the industry and valuable contributions to the development of the Fund’s activities.
Very affected by his sudden death, we present our most sincere condolences to this family.

Eurimages in Venice...
09/09/2013 – The Jury of the 70th Venice Film Festival chaired by Bernardo Bertolucci awarded last Saturday the Coppa Volpi for Best Actress to Elena Cotta (pictured) in the Eurimages supported co-production Via Castellana Bandiera by Emma Dante (IT, CH, FR). This film was also given several collateral awards among which the Francesco Pasinetti Awards for Best Actors, the Lina Mangiacapre Award, the Soundtracks Stars Award as well as a Special Mention for a debut film from the Young Jury Members of the Vittorio Veneto Film Festival. The Eurimages supported co-production Zoran, il Moi Nipote Scemo (Zoran, my Nephew The Idiot), by Matteo Oleotto (IT, SI) was also rewarded with the FEDIC Award, the Schermi di Qualità Award, the RaroVideo – International Critics’ Week Award and a Special Mention from the Venice International critics’ Week to Giuseppe Battiston, its main actor. Last but not least, the Eurimages supported co-production between Germany and France selected out of competition, Die Andere Heimat – Chronik Einer Sehnsucht (Home from Home – Chronicle of a Vision) by Edgar Reitz, received a Special Mention Mouse d’Argento among the Mouse d’Oro Awards.
Eurimages Co-Production Development Award in Sarajevo
26/08/2013 – The Jury of the CineLink which was held during the Sarajevo Film Festival presented the Eurimages Co-Production Development Award (€30,000) last Saturday to a project entitled Park, written and directed by Sofia Exarchou and produced by Amanda Livanou from the companies Guanaco Film Co and Beben Films in Greece. The jury, composed of Jacqueline Ada (CNC), Behrooz Hashemian (Silkroad Production), Cedomir Kolar (ASAP Films), Georges Goldenstern (Cannes Film Festival), Remi Burah (ARTE France), Annamaria Lodato (ARTE France) and Petri Kemppinen (Eurimages representative for Finland), highlighted “a project about young people and their need to be accepted in a country that is going through socially and economically not so glorious times”.
Moreover, the Cineuropa Prize amounting to €5,000, awarded to a film which, besides its undeniable artistic qualities promotes the idea of European dialogue and integration, went to the Eurimages supported co-production With Mom by Faruk Lončarević (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany, Slovenia).
Last but not least, and as in all previous years, the Sarajevo Film Festival presented the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo Award which honours an individual for exceptional contribution to the affirmation and development of South East film industry. The 2013 Sarajevo Film Festival presented its highest honour to Béla Tarr, one of the most significant directors of our time and founder of the film factory at the Sarajevo School for Science and Technology (SSST) and Roberto Olla, Executive Director of Eurimages.
The Notebook receives the Crystal Globe in Karlovy Vary
06/07/2013 - The Jury of the 48th International Film Festival of Karlovy Vary awarded the Crystal Globe to the drama by János Szász, The Notebook, a co-production between Hungary, Germany, France and Austria supported by Eurimages. This film was also awarded the Europa Cinemas Label "for its intense depiction of childhood, death and life during wartime, with many metaphors, realistic violence, but also hope for a better future".

Another Palme d'Or for Eurimages !
27/05/2013 - The jury of the 66th Festival of Cannes, presided over by the American director and producer Steven Spielberg, awarded the Palme d’Or to the Franco-Tunisian filmmaker Abdellatif Kechiche for La Vie d’Adèle and his two actresses, Léa Seydoux and Adèle Exarchopoulos. This Eurimages supported co-production between France, Belgium and Spain, based on the comic strip Blue is the Warmest Colour by Julie Maroh, conquered the hearts of the critics from the moment the screening had ended. It was also named best film in the main competition at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival by the Fipresci International Federation of Film Critics on Saturday 25 May.
The prize for Best Actress went to Bérénice Béjo for The Past by Asghar Farhadi, a co-production between France and Italy supported by Eurimages which also received the Ecumenical Jury Prize. Lastly, the Grand Prix of Critics’ Week of the Cannes Film Festival was awarded on Thursday, 23 May, to the Italian directors Fabio Grassadonia and Antonio Piazza for their film Salvo, a Franco-Italian co-production supported by Eurimages. This film, which tells the story of Salvo, a killer in the Sicilian Mafia, a loner, cold, ruthless, upset by his encounter with Rita, a young blind woman, also received the France 4 “Prix Revelation”.
The Eurimages Fund is delighted with this success which honours its choices. These films demonstrate the Fund’s commitment to fostering cinematographic creativity and once again confirm the strength of the Eurimages label.

Interview Roberto Olla
07/05/2013 - Eurimages has launched a 360° study into the performance of the Fund’s activities and, more specifically, into support requirements for cinematic co-production. Further to a call for tenders, OLSBERG – SPI, London (UK), were selected to carry out this study. Jonathan Olsberg and his team will be in Cannes during the Film Festival. In order to ensure the success of this project, the Executive Director, Mr Roberto Olla, asks that all producers who are beneficiaries of Eurimages support to kindly respond to any questions from Jonathan and his team during the Festival. A seventh Eurimages supported film in Cannes!
29/04/2013 - As announced at the press conference held on 18 April, the Cannes Film Festival has completed its Official Selection with the inclusion of several films amongst which the Eurimages supported co-production My Sweet Pepperland (FR, DE) by Hiner Saleem in Un Certain Regard. Seven films supported by Eurimages are now part of the various Cannes selections.

The film Salvo (Italy, France, Germany) by Fabio Grassadonia and Antonio Piazza has been selected for competition in the Critics Week while The Congress (Germany, Belgium, Poland, Luxembourg, France, Israel) by Ari Folman has been selected to open the Directors Fortnight.

16/04/2013 - The 32nd Istanbul Film Festival Jury rewarded two Eurimages supported films with 3 main awards: the Golden Tulip Best Director Award went to Asli Özge for her co-production Hayatboyu/Lifelong (TR, DE, NL), the Golden Tulip for Best Director of Photography Award was presented to Emre Erkmen for his work in the same film; the Golden Tulip Best Actor Award was given to Ercan Eksal for his performance in Yozgat Blues (TR, DE) by Mahmut Fazil Coskun.
The FACE Award presented with the co-operation of the Council of Europe and Eurimages went to Syngué Sabour/Patience Stoneby Atiq Rahimi. A Special Mention Prize in the Human Rights in Cinema Competition was presented to Epizoda u zivotu beraca zeljeza/An episode in the life of an iron picker by Danis Tanovic and Jiseul by Muel O.

28/03/2013 - With the new online application system, a paperless era begins at Eurimages. The European Cinema Support Fund for Co-Productions will no longer accept paper applications – the new system will be available on the Eurimages web site from 3 April 2013. Eurimages will also be launching a new support programme for distribution and marketing – President Jobst Plog explains why he believes that it will not work in Europe to set only one standard.
